For instance, in "Between Two Laws" Weber writes that certain communities are able to provide the conditions for not only such "bourgeois" values as citizenship and true democracy, "but also much more intimate and yet eternal values, including artistic ones." 20 The language that Weber uses to characterize these two types of values leads to the interpretation that he held them to be a subjective matter. T h e new society evolved symbiotically with the old. All La Trobe University Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor law courses include the subjects required by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board to qualify for admission to the legal profession in Victoria as an Australian lawyer. Were sociologists guilty of solipsism or of an irresponsible cultural relativism? Moreover, it seems reasonably clear that, at least in some areas of sociology, knowledge gained through scientific investigation is cumulative (Berelson & Steiner 1964).

Perhaps, prenatal exposure to testosterone and other sex hormones operates in a similar way to "bias" preferences for certain colors in humans. Marx did not criticize the liberal economists very explicitly for this. An arts/science degree gives you a combination of knowledge and skills that apply to a range of careers in areas like environmental science, journalism, research, health and business. The sociological approach is distinguished from pure contemplation or speculation by the fact that it subjects phenomenological analysis of these phenomena to empirical test.

To understand a piece of social research, you need to know the unit of analysis in a study; what sampling procedures were used; the difference between a descriptive and an explanatory study; what a hypothesis is; and how concepts, variables, operational measures, and relationships between variables are defined. A second step in exploring a new area involves learning something about the procedures people use to do their work.
