Ordinance No.1 of 1901, for example, “confirmed that all persons born in or brought into the Mandated Territories were free” (273). Though free upon their arrival in England, London drove many into abject poverty. What fascinates me about the post-slavery indentured servant era of sugar production is the racial and cultural makeup of Caribbean islands that results from it. We are not sure that our readers will approve of our mention of those persons, so strong must be their dislike of everything that seems to feed the flame of American prejudice against colored people; and in this they may be right, but we think otherwise.

The Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in most Southern states. What I found is the freedmen in 1870 are poorer in the richest areas of the Black Belt than just about anywhere else. The Morant Bay Rebellion confirmed this belief. It required legislative approval for manumissions, which slaveholders had previously been able to arrange privately. violence as advocated by David Walker and practiced by Nat Turner; colonization to Africa advocated by the American Colonization Society; or peaceful "moral suasion" and political agitation as advocated by William Lloyd Garrison and black abolitionists less radical than David Walker, such as Frederick Douglass.

Several years ago every vessel, large or small, of steam or of sail, bound to our Pacific coast and hailing from the Flowery kingdom, added to the number and strength of this new element of our population. In 1865, the Confederacy collapsed after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House; all slaves in the Confederacy were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. Sharp is an important figure who has not been given his historical due. It should, however, be noted per contra that such support as came to the administration in Illinois in the election of 1862 was attributed by the Chicago Tribune to the emancipation proclamation and the removal of General Buell; that Grimes of Iowa considered the proclamation a source of strength in his state; and that a similar view as to Missouri was expressed by the Missouri Democrat.

During the Renaissance women lost even more of what little economic power they had, because men increasingly went out of the home to work in all-male professions, thus separating home and work, leaving women behind, working unpaid in the home. It would require military victories to actually free the three million slaves in the Confederacy. First-hand accounts of formerly enslaved people were extremely valuable in this way.
